Vietnam hits major seafood export milestone, but faces grim forecast for 2023

Vietnam has surpassed USD 10 billion (EUR 9.4 billion) in seafood exports thus far in 2022, reaching an all-time high for the country, thanks to a post-Covid recovery in global demand.

But high global inflation and an uncertain Chinese market have the country’s seafood executives anxious about a possible downturn.

Vietnam took in USD 10.17 billion (EUR 9.57 billion) from its seafood exports between January and November 2022, a 27.4 percent year-over-year increase, meeting the country’s long-sought-after goal, first set in 2011.

VASEP honored 10 excellent pangasius enterprises in 2022

The US pangasius imports in the first 10 months of 2022 exceed 2021

(seafood. vasep.com.vn) According to statistics of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in the first 10 months of 2022, imports of frozen pangasius fillets into the US market reached nearly 110 thousand tons, worth 474 million USD, up 24% in volume and 88% in value over the same period in 2021.

In 2021, the demand for frozen pangasius fillets imported into the US market also had a strong breakthrough, nearly doubling in volume, from 58 thousand tons to nearly 107 thousand tons. The value also nearly doubled from $158 million to $314 million.

Vietnam’s seafood exports nearing $11 bln in 2022

Vietnam's seafood exports this year could reach $11 billion for the first time, spearheaded by shrimp, pangasius and tuna, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Truong Dinh Hoe, VASEP general secretary, said at a conference in HCMC Saturday that by November, seafood exports had already crossed $10 billion, so by the end of the year, it could reach $11 billion for the first time ever.
